Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC)

The SCSC Course is a multidisciplinary study that deals with military studies and strategic studies fostering a unique nexus between the active and passive defence domain of warfighting and peace and security context. The course is aimed at responding to the demand of highly qualified commanders and staff officers at operational and strategic levels.

The course emphasises on military leadership at operational and strategic levels of war, with particular reference to the role, development and use of military power as a strategic resource and its impact on the international system.

Students in the programme will acquire several theoretical, conceptual, and anyltical tools with which to filter, order and attach contextual meaning to a plethora of themes or issues regarding military tactics in land, air and maritime at operational level complemented by deeper understanding of national security, strategy, international relations and foreign policy. With the modules in the course, students will attain knowledge, attitude, and skills that will lead to strategic and practical leadership in the defence, peace, and security sector.

The SCSC programme will contribute to Malawi national policy initiatives, especially the goal to widen access to higher education in accordance with the National Education Sector Plan (GoM 2009); realization of aspiration no. 4 of Africa Agenda 2063 which seeks a peaceful and secure Africa; attainment of Malawi Growth and Development Strategy III (GoM 2017) on peace and security (article 7.8); the global Sustainable Development Goals (UN 2015) no. 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), by directly working in security support systems of activities; the Malawi 2063 agenda enabler on sustainable peace and security (GoM 2020). The programme will also contribute to the production of highly skilled and qualified human capital in the defence, peace, and security sector.

Course Objectives

Following the needs assessment of MDF senior officer’s capability gap, the SCSC Curriculum is designed to prepare officers for senior military leadership and equip them with a greater understanding of political, social-economic and security problems in the contemporary world. In order to meet this goal, selected students will have to successfully complete Military Studies programme and Strategic Studies programme with MUST.

Inculcate in our students a flexible mindset based on an ability to embrace complexity, make sense of chaos, think critically and creatively in developing clear and articulate ideas or solutions.

Improve the combined, joint, intra-governmental, inter-agency and multinational (CJIIM) approach to the delivery of security and the conduct of operations drawing on the very best expertise and skills, wherever they may lie.

Promote a moral and ethical approach to the profession of arms.

Develop students’ understanding of the contemporary operating environment and global trends.

Maximize diversity by inclusion of civilians, international directing staff on our list of facilitators to increase understanding and aid the formation of different perspectives.

In conjunction with MUST use research and experiential based teaching, at the Post Graduate Diploma level, to ensure the education we deliver is cutting edge and relevant.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Show individual knowledge and ability to apply the accepted procedures and functions of various services of the military staff.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles and techniques in the application of Land, Maritime and Air power.
Apply leadership and management skills in the planning and execution of operations at tactical, operational and strategic level.
Take part in combined, joint, intra-governmental, inter-agency and multinational (CJIIM) warfare and operational art planning
Determine training needs at unit and higher formation levels with a focus on joint, combined and multinational operations.
Compare national security order in relation to regional and global security trends.
Develop abilities to offer professional military perspective on national issues.
